What are the possible outcomes of an appeal?

Is there a difference between a verdict being declared "unsafe" and being "quashed" or "overturned".

If I understand things correctly, someone whose verdict has been declared unsafe is not being declared innocent.  Is there any outcome that does mean the defendant is back to the position they would have been in if the jury had acquitted them?

there are 3 possible outcomes the appeal will be refused meaning the conviction stands the conviction will be quashed and you will be free to go or the conviction will be quashed and a retrial ordered.

OK, so we're talking about the second one. If someone's conviction is quashed, have they been declared innocent?
