And, I think we can rule out fishing gear as no rod was seen. And although some rods come apart in sections, a backpack is not big enough for the sections not to be poking out the top!

how far away was he from a river.

if he had a rucksack he could have put the knife back in it and got rid of it or cleaned it at his lesure.

The Newbattle end of the path is only metres from The River Esk. It runs under Newbattle bridge. It also runs parrallel to Newbattle Abbey Crescent and through the grounds of Newbattle Abbey College.

Yes indeed, having a rucksack would have been helpfull for taking the knife away!!
